I want to share the recovery journey of my client Emma (obviously, not her real name!) I completed my final session with Emma at the end of November. Emma had been diagnosed with M.E in 2014.
Putting a number on how you feel
When we started work at the end of August Emma completed a Symptoms Impact Questionnaire Revised (SIQR). This is a tool we use to quantiy the impact of chronic fatigue on daily activities. The SIQR gives us a way of putting a number against how well a client is feeling at a particular point in time. Emma’s score was 46.8.
Emma completed the SIQR again in her last session and it came out with a score of 6. That’s a whopping 87% difference. To put this into context, SIQR’s were developed within the NHS where anything over a 14% change is considered clinically meaningful.
I think it’s fair to say that Emma’s change was VERY meaningful!
We didn’t really needed the SIQR score to tell us how much Emma’s health had improved. Emma looked bright, bubbly and alive. The difference from our first meeting was HUGE! I know Emma won’t mind me saying that she looked how she felt – exhausted, strained and very “flat”.
A change of life
Life for Emma was extremely tough. Being mum to a busy, active 8 year old was exhausting. Emma spent most afternoons asleep, anything from an hour to 2 hours a day. She needed to do this to have enough energy to do the school run and look after her family in the evening. Emma regularly crashed into bed at 8pm, totally wiped out.
Emma’s recovery to date has been amazing. She now walks her much loved dog for 1.5 hours in the afternoon instead of sleeping. She is able to do the school pick up and enjoy her evenings with the family. Emma is able to go to bed at a later time and has even had a couple of nights out!
I am not going to tell you that Emma is fully recoverd – she isn’t 100% how she used to be….. YET.
The key areas of focus
Emma will be keeping an wary eye on the areas she now knows are touchpoints that cause her health to dip. Identifying the issues underpinning the touchpoints was an important step. Combining this with plans to manage or eliminate the issues made a big difference to Emma.
Having clarity around what “being well” meant to Emma was another key area of focus. I know it sounds too simple, but honestly, if you aren’t clear around how you will look, feel and be when you are “well”, how on earth are you going to know when you have achieved it?
Our final area of recovery was to work with health kinesiology therapy to get into the subconscious and release the emotional and physical stresses that were impacting Emma’s energy. Before you dismiss this as woo-woo nonsense please consider the impact that our mindset, thoughts and feelings have on our physical health and wellbeing.

The future in recovery…
Emma is well on her way to getting her life back. She will need to continue to be vigilant and put into place the things she knows are helpful to her. It is really exciting for both of us that Emma will be able to live the life she wants rather than having to live with the restrictions of chronic fatigue.
